The Eyes on the Canal project was part of the global Cities Fit for Climate Change project, executed by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. Focusing on reimagining Chennai's Buckingham Canal, the project aimed to develop climate-sensitive strategies and financing sources for selected cities globally. In Chennai, participatory planning activities, including government and community stakeholder engagements, awareness walks, and an open-ideas competition, were conducted. The initiative sought to transform the canal into a livable space, fostering community interest and ownership, combating the collective neglect that the canal has endured.
