The project aims to enhance sanitation initiatives in Tamil Nadu. It established the Technical Support Unit (TSU) within the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN). The TSU has demonstrated Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) solutions in urban areas, contributing to GoTN's sanitation strategy and scaling these solutions across urban Tamil Nadu. Key objectives include policy support, infrastructure design, and capacity building. Outcomes have featured a state-wide investment plan for treatment facilities, clustering of urban bodies for optimised resource use, and the utilisation of sewage treatment plants for fecal sludge management. The programme also involves behaviour change campaigns, capacity development, private sector engagement, and safety standards improvement.
