SDI is an annual competition for college students to innovate and combat climate change in the buildings sector. Student teams partner with real estate entities for live projects to develop net-zero energy buildings that are resilient to the impact of climate change. The multidisciplinary student teams work on live projects to generate real and affordable solutions for project partners consisting of private developers, government agencies, NGOs and housing societies. The objective of SDI is to build a network of knowledgeable and skilled people who can innovate and implement resilient net-zero energy buildings to combat climate change. It also hopes to create a sustained culture of collaboration and innovation between students, faculty, industry, government, policymakers and NGOs to increase market adoption of affordable and accessible net-zero energy buildings. SDI is co-conducted by IIHS and the Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE).
