S Mohamed Yasin is a civil and environmental engineer with a specialisation in green buildings and their environmental impacts. His career spans over seven years during which he has garnered extensive experience in the WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) sector and the construction industry, with a particular focus on sustainable and eco-friendly building practices. His expertise lies in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability through innovative solutions.
At IIHS, he serves as a junior solid waste management expert. In this role, he provides technical assistance to ensure the efficient operation of micro-composting centres.
He was part of the Clean Puducherry Campaign under the Swachh Bharat Mission, where he assessed sanitation needs, created awareness through information, education and communication (IEC) activities, and conducted baseline surveys. He also worked on a project to estimate the unsafe return of human excreta to the environment in Tiruchirappalli and Coimbatore, collaborating with the Tiruchirappalli City Corporation and PNP municipality near Coimbatore. Additionally, he coordinated the WASH Flood Response and Early Recovery efforts in Alappuzha district, Kerala, in partnership with UNICEF and Gramalaya. His work involved rehabilitating dug wells and septic tanks, analysing water and sanitation conditions, and educating communities and officials on safe handling practices.
In 2019, he led the rehabilitation of government schools affected by Cyclone Gaja in Nagapattinam and Thanjavur districts. As the district coordinator, he assessed the damage to water and sanitation facilities, formulated comprehensive reports, and rehabilitated schools while creating awareness about hygiene and sanitation among students and the community.
