Agriculture is the single most important and organised human activity that has had a tremendous impact on the environment over millennia. Humans have transformed the landscape through traditional cultivation, and more recently, mechanised industrial practices. The way we eat, and therefore the way we live has been influenced by local agricultural practices. Access and control of water sources is to a large extent determined by agriculture. Agriculture has had a deep impact on the birth of civilisations and their expansion. It has led to ransformative societal changes and subsequent economic and socio-political challenges around food systems.
