Surface water constitutes less than 0.02 per cent of the total water available globally. Rivers and streams are moving surface water bodies, while lakes, ponds and wetlands are examples of static surface water bodies. Most of the human population primarily depends on this small fraction of surface water found in rivers, lakes, ponds, and other wetlands. This reliance is mainly due to the ease of access and the vast knowledge available in tapping these resources, which also makes them vulnerable to overexploitation and pollution.
