The IIHS Internet of Things (IoT) Lab anchors IoT systems and platform engineering, hardware and software at IIHS.
Areas of Work
Data Collection
The Lab uses a network of smart sensors integrated across the Campus to gather real-time information on energy use, environmental conditions, agricultural output, occupancy, and equipment performance. Through edge computing, this data can be processed locally, enabling faster responses and decisions without relying solely on central systems or the cloud.
Prototyping Hardware and Software
The Lab prototypes and tests new IoT tools and systems tailored to the needs of the Campus, exploring innovative ways to improve how Campus systems operate.
CampusOS
The Lab led the development of the CampusOS, an open-source, modular platform that brings together and manages multiple IoT devices and applications across IIHS’ Bengaluru campuses.
Data-Driven Resource Optimisation
The Lab analyses Campus data to identify patterns and insights that support better decision-making. This helps optimise energy use, improve resource allocation, and plan maintenance more effectively, resulting in cost savings and improved environmental performance.
Building Resilient Digital Systems
The Lab builds robust campus infrastructure that can recover quickly from disruptions. This includes backup servers, uninterrupted power systems, a solar-powered microgrid, redundant internet connections, and a disaster recovery plan, supported by a flexible and scalable technology stack.
