Geospatial Lab
Applying geospatial analysis, modelling, and
visualization to understand India’s urban transformation
About
The IIHS Geospatial Lab anchors the application of spatial analysis to research, practice, and training at IIHS. It focuses on applied geospatial analysis, modelling and visualisation across a diverse set of themes and applications, and develops open source GIS tools and platforms that improve access to geospatial data and enable data collection and analytics.
The Lab integrates earth observation imagery, advanced geospatial methods, and data visualisation to study spatial patterns and dynamics of India’s urban transformation. Its work spans urban growth, ecosystem monitoring, climate resilience, disaster management, economic geography, infrastructure access, inequality, and sustainability.
Using open source GIS tools, large earth observation datasets, time-series analysis, and machine learning, the Lab examines spatio-temporal trends in land, water, and climate systems. It also develops web-based visualisation platforms and digital tools for environmental monitoring, spatial surveys, and analytics.
The Lab aims to become the national hub for the use and teaching of geospatial sciences and technologies, combining technological innovation and process expertise with interdisciplinary knowledge.

Practice
The Lab integrates advanced geospatial methods with emerging technologies to develop accessible web-based platforms and digital tools for spatial data collection, analysis, visualisation, and environmental monitoring.
Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure
Applies advanced spatial analysis to strengthen sustainable urban and territorial planning and policy research using multi-scalar data sets on infrastructure and services, including transport, water and sanitation, energy, and education, with a focus on urban systems.
Empowering Policy Analysis
Uses large-scale spatial data sets on socio-economic, demographic, infrastructural, environmental, and climatic conditions to visualise and analyse spatio-temporal patterns of urbanisation.
Digital Tools and Platforms
Develops geospatial data platforms and tools for data collection, analysis, and dissemination using open source technologies, hosted on institutional servers and cloud infrastructure to ensure data security and sovereignty.
"Our schools are not silos - they are lenses through which we examine, understand, and shape the urban future."

Research
The Lab was established to transform the IIHS, Kengeri Campus into a dynamic testbed for IoT-enabled systems. It explores how connected technologies can reshape Campus operations, improve sustainability, and support new forms of research and learning.
Urban Growth Modelling
Analyses urban expansion using integrated remote sensing and demographic data sets to study spatial and temporal patterns, urban morphology, and ecosystem change, and to develop methods for quantification and assessment.
Regional Ecosystem Trends
Examines large-scale trends of ecosystem change across the country, developing tools to monitor climate variability, track natural system shifts, and assess associated risks to food security and critical infrastructure.
